Artist Feature: Lorin Stephens / Art / Class of 2022
By Ana Haapala

Lorin Stephens is a senior at St. Mary’s and has been an artist her whole life, primarily drawing and painting. Her inspiration comes from those around her as well as the intricacy of complex emotions. When asked by Escribe about her creative process, Stephens wrote that her work begins with a primary idea and branches off from there. Her artistic vision expands as she takes notes about the intended meaning of the piece, sketches different compositions, and takes reference photos to base her work on.

Stephens’s featured piece, “Self-Reflection,” was part of her junior year AP Studio Art Sustained Investigation, which explored the peace and freedom experienced in nature. This specific piece surrounds the stress and lack of confidence that can occur when getting ready for school or other public spaces. Speaking with Escribe Maria, Stephens explained, “The makeup symbolizes trying to fit in and the mirror represents my self-consciousness and self-doubt.” She placed “Self-Reflection” at the beginning of her portfolio in order to establish emotions of unease and insecurity that she perceives in society. However, over the course of her Sustained Investigation, her works focus increasingly on the liberty and self-expression that nature offers her.
During her time at St. Mary’s, Stephens has received one Gold Key, two Silver Keys, and seven Honorable Mentions from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. “Self-Reflection” received a Silver Key this year.
