"Rosy Reflections" by Mallory Reynolds
Mallory Reynolds is a sophomore at St. Mary's Academy. Speaking to Escribe Maria about "Rosy Reflections," shown above, Reynolds shares, "I had such a fun time creating this artwork, as I got to experiment with a lot of different mediums." Originally, she drew the rosy-cheeked subject, who was inspired by an online character design, on paper, using colored pencils and pens. Afterwards, she moved it to a digital format and "messed around" to craft the distinctive reflections, which she explains correspond to "where the image got flipped and moved." This unique process led to "a final artwork that is both traditional and digital."
Surrounded by art, Reynolds began drawing several years ago, inspired to emulate the artists whose work she admired. She identifies middle school as the period where she began dedicating more time to her art. When planning a new piece, she looks at reference photos, "pull[ing] out colors, poses, layouts, character designs," and other aspects she could incorporate into her work. Inspiration strikes her in a variety of places, such as when she is "going to museums, spending time outside, flipping through magazines, or scrolling on Pinterest."
"Rosy Reflections" was published in the 2021-22 issue of Escribe Maria.
