Ever since I was young, I’d stick my fingers in hot candle wax

Every night, when I sit at my desk, and try to write

I light a candle, I play with the fire for a little while

It burns my skin, but I don't mind, I like it

Saw someone saying they could touch fire

So I wanted to do it, but even better than them

And that’s what I did, I would get used to the burn until my fingers went ashy

Did it for hours a day, during class, or break, I’d be there

Can't stop, turned into an addiction, followed me for a while now

Burning my fingertips, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday......

Went through glass jar, after glass jar

Fire became my lover, she drew me in, didn’t let go

She burned through my heart, entering through my hands

The white chair by my desk, slowly turned grey

Grey ash, grey clouds, they still stain the light plastic

Smell of ‘ fresh linens’ and ‘Midnight sky’, they lingered for months

Locked in my room, jars all around, the lighter glued to my hand

Addicted to the ‘tssk’ sound it made when I pressed it

The thing that made me feel safe, even if it wasn’t, it felt nice to pretend

Yellow painted the walls every night, it was so warm, windows closed

Please help me stop, my fingertips, how they hurt... stinging.

But that was a while ago, a few months at best

Now, Midnight Citrus is melting, with every word I type she burns a little more

She doesn’t force me to burn my hands, and I don’t feel forced either

The wall is still yellow at night, but decorated with shadow puppets

As I tell the stories of the girl with no fire left

Maéline Bringuier is currently a sophomore at St. Mary’s Academy. She has been writing as long as she can remember and notes that she did her earliest writing in French. Though she has always been amazed by art as a whole, she is particularly connected to writing songs. As a music writer, producer, and cover artist, Bringuier is well versed in the creative process. She always listens to music while writing and enjoys working at night. When writing, she likes to reflect on her day or on recent observations she has made. She is inspired by the singer and songwriter Kim Jonghyun, her personal life, and the art around her.
