"The Dreamer" by Sophia Proctor
Quickly it leaks, dripping from the mind,
Blazing fever, eyes fixed open, my spirit yet to find,
Crimson Goddess of aptitude, bless me with your divine
Beloved fruit of brilliance, feed me from your vine
Until the dagger in my heart drips golden blood refine
I will exude into the paper, virtuosity will be mine
Weeping, laughing, loving, never straight down the line
To memories and artistry I make a gleaming shrine
Soul feeding, fear receding!
As I grow closer to where I began, my passion will incline.
Sophia Proctor is a St. Mary's Academy junior. She shares that she composed her poem "The Dreamer" to "highlight the passion of young people," focusing particularly on the female experience. Proctor also shares that she aims to capture "the desire to give something to the world with the hope that it will live on long after we are gone."
"The Dreamer" was featured in the 2021-2022 edition of Escribe Maria.
