Since Time Immemorial
Snow has fallen onto the mountains of old,
Weaving time’s veil.
The gossamer of life is lifted when stories are told,
And when twilight comes, memories will prevail.
Picture petroglyphs stark against stone,
Diary entries written for the future.
Artifacts planted, antiquity sown;
These are history’s suture.
Next to a weathered tree or by light of fire,
The spoken word is a wind that howls through the night.
The only common thread and worldly pacifier
Is a chronicle of the years under dawn’s first light.

St. Mary’s Academy senior Eavan O’Neill began creating poetry in eighth grade. She uses writing as a creative outlet to capture the beauty of nature and emotion. Her early works were simple, narrative driven pieces written in free verse, but she eventually began creating more abstract poems with rhyme schemes and varied subject matter including mythology, childhood, and love. When asked about her creative process, she stated that she draws her inspiration from words, phrases, or even names. Then, she likes to write down these ideas as soon as she can in order to allow her prose or poetry to manifest itself directly from its source. Her writing, and poetry especially, is influenced by poets such as John Keats and James Wright.Y7
Eavan's poem “Since Time Immemorial” explores the enduring nature of history through artifacts and landmarks. Her inspiration stemmed from visiting a petroglyph site where stories were carved into rock. There, she was moved to write a piece that expressed the ability of art and other forms of storytelling to recall history. She mentioned that, “[a]s a writer, storytelling is a craft [she’s] always trying to hone, and [she] was especially motivated by how well the petroglyphs conveyed their lore despite being images.”
Eavan submits annually to both Escribe Maria and The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. She is a Scholastic silver key recipient and has been featured in our magazine twice.
